From the Farmers

- weekly news & notes -

Each of the Amish farmers working with Prairie Foods is contributing to a series of weekly handwritten farm notes, which get copied and put in with orders. We thought we’d share those here!

Editor’s Note: Did you know that English is the second language of the Amish? Amish individuals typically begin learning to speak English at age 6, spend 8 years in school, and, by age 14, have left school. They then focus on developing practical skills. Some Amish youngsters whom I’ve met are running butcher shops, milking rooms, dairy parlors, and/or making most of the value-added farm products by age 17 or 18! They often have a spouse and a home by their early 20s, and a number of children by the time they are in their 30s.
